Implementation of a two-day workshop on the theme “Alternative Tourism and People with Disabilities in Mountainous Areas”
MADE CONSULTANTS, acting as an external partner of AKOMM PSILOREITIS Development S.A., undertook the implementation of a two-day workshop focusing on “Alternative Tourism and People with Disabilities in Mountainous Areas,” within the framework of the project EMbleMatic 2.
The EMbleMatic 2 project is implemented under the Local LEADER/CLLD Program, sub-measure 19.3 “Support for the preparation and implementation of cooperation (transnational & interterritorial)” of Measure 19 of the Rural Development Program 2014–2020, co-financed by Greece and the European Union.
The workshop was held on May 29 and 30, 2025, at the premises of AKOMM – PSILOREITIS Development S.A. in Anogeia, with the participation of representatives from local government, development and social organizations, as well as stakeholders active in the tourism sector.
On the first day, the EMbleMatic 2 project was presented, along with its objectives and the prospects for enhancing inclusivity in tourism. This was followed by engaging presentations on the inclusion of individuals with visual and sensory disabilities in culture and digital applications. Additionally, good practices from the Region of Crete were showcased, including the upgrade of access to the Samaria Gorge, accessibility initiatives in the Municipality of Rethymno, the creation of a model summer camp center for people with disabilities in Afrathias, and accessibility interventions at the Dikteon Cave.
On the second day, the workshop focused on international best practices, with examples from Catalonia (Spain), notably the experience of the Museu del Ciment (Cement Museum) in integrating accessibility, as well as the initiatives of the Agencia de Desenvolupament del Berguedà (Development Agency of Berguedà) in creating an accessible tourist destination.
The workshop emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive approach to integrating people with disabilities into tourism planning, as well as the importance of collaboration among local government bodies, the private sector, and civil society.
