Students and teachers of Panormo and Bali clean the shores of Mylopotamos.
Two-day shore cleaning on October 21 and 22.
MADE Consultants, in collaboration with the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) organized a two-day awareness raising and shore cleaning event in the Municipality of Mylopotamos on October 21st and 22nd, 2021 as part of the project “Waste ashore! Students together with tourism and leisure professionals get informed and take action about marine litter in Mylopotamos’ shores” which aims to raise environmental awareness among the population of the area and reduce single-use plastic, through information and education actions.
Students and teachers from the primary schools of Bali and Panormos, as well as from the Panormos high school attended the two-day event. On the first day, environmental awareness actions took place on the beach of Geropotamos, while on the second one, on the beach “Limni” in Panormos. The actions carried out with the guidance of the experienced staff of MIO-ECSDE and the students and the teachers had the opportunity to evaluate the waste that were collected on the coast as well as those that were retrieved from the sea with the help from the local diving center. The ultimate goal of the two-day event was to clean the coasts in cooperation with the students of the area, while educational activities carried out in nature with the aim of environmental awareness of the students and the local society.
Especially on Thursday, October 21st, 2021, the cleaning took place simultaneously with the actions of the phase A’ of the Asterousia Hybrid University 2021 with the participation of Greek and foreign executives of UNESCO, as well as executives of biosphere reserves.
The project “Waste ashore!” aims, through information and awareness actions focused on tourism professionals, educational community, and residents, to reduce marine litter and especially disposable plastics that burden the seas and coasts of our country by thousands of tons each year.
